SA's national flag flew proudly over the country's pavilion in hall six, as CeBIT opened in Hannover, Germany, on Tuesday morning.

The country's participation at CeBIT is organised by the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI), through its South African Vanguard of Technology (SAVANT) programme, with support from the SA consulate general, in Munich.

The SA Electrotechnical Export Council and the Joburg Centre for Software Engineering are also at CeBIT in support of the local ICT sector.

Seven small and medium-sized companies were given an opportunity by the DTIto showcase their offerings at the annual expo this year.

Greg Vercellotti, executive director at Johannesburg-based Dariel Solutions, says: “This is the first time we're exhibiting at CeBIT. Dariel provides specialised software development services to clients in SA. I'm hoping to link up at CeBIT with companies that will partner with us to market these applications in Europe and other parts of the world.”

In the field of information security, Pretoria-based SensePost has sales manager Shane Kemp at CeBIT. He says: “We have been to CeBIT before. It proved really valuable because I was able to reconnect with some of the companies and international partners we have worked with in the past. We are back again this year hoping to make these contacts more concrete and establish new partnerships.”

Redline Telecommunications is part of the Parsec Group and is a supplier of “free space optics” solutions. MD Rynier van der Watt says: “I've come to CeBIT on the lookout for reseller partners who can promote, sell, install and support our product elsewhere in the world.”

MyVOIP, from Johannesburg, is at CeBIT to exhibit its SchoolDiary software. It is also looking for new technology and solutions to import and market in SA.

Three Western Cape companies in the SA Pavilion are Candor Technologies, which offers printing-on-demand services; IQ Retail, a developer of integrated point-of-sale and accounting software; and QWIX, which has a warehouse management and asset-tracking solution.

“CeBIT provides a huge opportunity for SA to showcase the fact that it has an innovative and vibrant ICT sector,” says the DTI.

“The companies that have come with us to CeBIT are a sample of the exciting products and services SA has to offer. By having the SA Pavilion at CeBIT we are demonstrating to the world that we are part of the international ICT community,” notes the department.
