A VPN/SD-WAN survey has gone live on ITWeb. The aim of the survey is to examine the current status of VPN/SD-WAN adoption at South African organisations.

The virtual private network (VPN) landscape has been changing in South Africa for many years now, driven by a number of factors, including: 1) declining prices of connectivity and managed networks; 2) improving broadband connectivity; and 3) adoption of cloud services. The implementation of VPN technologies using the public internet as a transport medium has been growing.

Particularly, SD-WAN has seen increasing adoption, as the technology itself began to mature, while service providers have developed their go-to-market strategies. Many companies that have been piloting this new technology have moved to full-scale deployment. However, the pace of change has been gradual. The COVID-19 related restrictions are expected to have accelerated the change taking place in the VPN market landscape, primarily owing to two factors: the accelerated adoption of cloud services as a part of digital transformation among companies; and the implementation of work-from-home policies.

The VPN/SD-WAN research survey aims to explore the changes taking place in the corporate environment with respect to the adoption of new VPN technologies, the extent of such adoption (varied across different company profiles), the teething problems encountered during new technology deployment and the benefits accruing from new VPN technology adoption. The objective of the survey is also to gauge the impact of the “new normal” on the adoption of SD-WAN.

By completing the questionnaire and leaving your contact details, you stand a chance to win a Takealot voucher to the value of R3 000. The results of the survey will be shared exclusively with survey respondents.

Definitions

Please read the following definitions before proceeding:

MPLS VPN

Based on the MPLS network, using dedicated links to connect network endpoints to the service provider’s network. Offers class of service (COS) capabilities and quality of service (QOS) guarantees per application.

SD-WAN

SD-WAN simplifies the management and operation of a WAN by decoupling the networking hardware from its control mechanism. Some of the network intelligence is based in the cloud, allowing centralised policy management and security. Commercially available internet access can be used by this technology to create WAN connections between sites.

SASE

Secure Access Service Edge simplifies wide-area networking (WAN) and security by delivering both as a cloud service directly to the source of connection (user, device, branch office, IOT device, edge computing location) rather than the enterprise data centre.
