Vodacom's former CEO, Pieter Uys, will join investment holding company Remgro from next April, the listed group said in a statement to shareholders.

Vodacom announced Uys' surprise resignation as CEO in July and said he would be replaced by Shameel Aziz-Joosub. Earlier this month, Uys stepped down from the board and his position was taken up by Aziz-Joosub, who will also take up the role of MD of Vodacom SA.

Remgro says Uys will join its management team from next April and will also serve on the management board. "His proven operational expertise and knowledge of new technology will be an asset to the company."

Uys, who was at the helm of Vodacom for four of the 20 years he spent with the company, has been focusing on transition and handover between his resignation and the end of March 2013.

At the time of the announcement of his departure, he told ITWeb that he was looking at moving to Cape Town to be close to his son, who will go to university there after completing matric next year.

Stellenbosch-based Remgro's interests consist mainly of investments in banking and financial services; medical services; food, wine and spirits; petroleum products; glass products; mining; media; and technology. It is chaired by Johann Rupert and has a 25% stake in Seacom.

Uys was appointed Vodacom CEO with effect from 1 October 2008. Before that, he was COO between April 2004 and September 2008. He also served as MD of Vodacom SA from December 2001 until March 2005.

Uys joined the group in 1993 as a member of the initial engineering team and was appointed to the board in April 2004.
