Apple-centric blog iMore is reporting that sources familiar with Apple's plans have said the iPhone 5S is due to debut in August.

iMore blogger Rene Ritchie has an impeccable track record when it comes to leaking accurate information about upcoming Apple products.

According to Ritchie, the iPhone 5S follows the same pattern as previous S-class iPhones, featuring the same design as the iPhone 5, but offering a more advanced processor and an improved camera.

"Much of this information matches other recent rumours, though the timelines do differ slightly. Details can and do change, sometimes repeatedly. However, the broad strokes for Apple's 2013 iOS line-up seem to be becoming clearer," says Ritchie.

According to the same sources, an April launch for the next-generation iPads is getting "serious consideration". Should this be the case, it is expected that the iPad 5 and iPad Mini 2 could make an appearance.

Ritchie notes that if the iPad Mini 2 is released, it will likely offer a "spec bump" or "have something other than Retina as a differentiator".

Earlier this year, rumours emerged that Apple was working on a low-cost version of the iPhone for release in 2013. Apple marketing chief Phil Schiller dismissed the speculation, saying it was "not a direction we want to be heading with our products".

To date, Apple's strategy in the lower cost phone segment has been to sell older models of the iPhone at discount prices. According to Schiller, while Apple may have just 20% of the smartphone market, the company has 75% of the profit.

The iPhone 5S will have to compete with the soon-to-be released Samsung Galaxy S4 handset - which will debut on 14 March.

The S4 is rumoured to feature a five-inch, 1080p display with 440ppi. It is also said to have a 13MP rear-facing camera, and will run Android 4.2.2. It has been said Samsung will emphasise features over raw specs, and the S4 is also rumoured to have eye-tracking technology that will allow users to scroll through pages on the device using only their eyes.
