ITWeb, VMware second CISO survey is under way

This one-of-its-kind survey will result in a research report about the unique challenges facing SA's top cyber security professionals.

Johannesburg, 17 Apr 2019

For the second year running, ITWeb, in partnership with VMware, is conducting an intensive cyber security survey, aimed at revealing the trends and issues that affect South African organisations today.

Ranka Jovanovic, ITWeb's editorial director, says the survey is now in its second year and provides a unique indication of the state of cyber security in SA, as it captures input from the people who are managing their organisation's cyber security: chief information security officers (CISOs) and other high-level security professionals.

Gareth James, Network and Security Manager for sub-Saharan Africa at VMware, says surveys such as this one are important to provide insight into the top priorities of our local CISOs.

ITWeb Security Summit 2019

Eight international keynote speakers are heading to SA to join the local experts and share insights with SA's cyber security community. We have Graham Cluley, independent computer security expert and public speaker; Ofir Hason, CEO and co-founder of CyberGym; and Pete Herzog, MD of the Institute for Security and Open Methodologies. "By conducting the survey for a second year running, we are keeping our finger on the pulse of those security challenges facing South African businesses. This allows us to help security teams respond to their businesses with qualified insights that provide targeted, focused value."

Last year, the survey revealed that a shift from perimeter security to a 'body armour' approach of security being put around every object within the data centre was taking place.

More than three-quarters of last year's respondents said they had been victims of impersonation and phishing, although fewer than 10% said actual penetration of the network occurred.

With the comparative data from last year to draw on, the 2019 Information Security Survey report will provide interesting trends analyses. In the wake of a turbulent and costly 2018, during which many of the world's organisations fell victim to attackers, the survey will show how SA's organisations have adapted their IT security postures and their budgets.

As with last year, the key findings will be revealed at ITWeb Security Summit 2019, to be held from 27 to 31 May at the Sandton Convention Centre. The full results are available to survey respondents exclusively, and will be compiled by ITWeb's research team and released in June.
