As the deadline for online registrations for the 2020 grade one and eight learner intake edges closer, the Gauteng Department of Education (GDE) has reminded parents and guardians to submit their applications.

The GDE opened its admissions Web site on 20 May, saying the online application system will close on 22 July, at midnight. The placement period will commence on 30 August to 30 September.

Shortly after the online registration portal went live, the department said it had received 459 608 applications, with 211 584 grade one applications and 248 024 for grade eight.

The GDE has been running its online admissions system since 2016. In the past, the department faced backlash for failing to communicate on time with parents on the status of their children's applications.

Despite hiccups, the department has remained resolute that the online application system is the way to go.

It decided to introduce the system to handle large volumes of applications, as well as allow for a transparent and fair school application process for those learners starting grades one and eight.

The provincial education department has reiterated admissions are a three-phase process made up of registration and application, placement of learners and admission to a school.

The department will host a media briefing on 21 July to provide an update on the online admissions application system and commencement of placements.
