Dell Technologies this week unveiled PowerMax, which it claims is the world's fastest storage array.

Dubbed as the 'next generation enterprise storage for the modern data centre', the Powermax system is built with an end-to-end Nonvolatile Memory Express (NVMe) interface, both for storage class memory and NVMe over Fabrics (NVMe-oF).

According to Dell, "NVMe represents the next evolutionary step in speed and latency reduction for flash media and next generation storage class memory (SCM) media", drastically reducing network latency delays.

PowerMax also has a real-time machine-learning engine built into the operating system, which Dell Technologies is calling 'autonomous storage'.

Dell made much of the new engine at its Dell Technologies World 2018 event in Las Vegas earlier this week, saying it manages 'hot' or frequently used data with predictive analytics and pattern recognition, and will make more than six billion decisions a day, with no loss of performance.

Powermax also for the first time includes inline deduplication, delivering 5:1 data reduction, and is said to achieve more than six nines availability. The appliance delivers up to 10 million IOPS and 50% better response times.

Modern data centre

Dell said the PowerMax is an integral part of its aim to deliver technology for the modern data centre, which it says will increasingly be asked to address both the traditional and next-generation workloads.

"We think one of the key attributes of the future's modern data centre is end-to-end NVMe storage," said Jeff Clarke, Dell vice-chairperson of products and operations.

"NVMe done right is the path to the next media storage class memory. It's how you take on increasingly bigger workloads with all of the data that's coming your way," he said, adding that the PowerMax was a 'beast'.

"The modern data centre is the proving ground for our customers to gain a digital advantage over their competition and achieve better business outcomes."

The PowerMax is available from May 3.
