A handy Facebook page that gives children lists of fun events, activities and services in their area, has launched as an Android app in time for the December holidays.

"I'm Bored" is a lifestyle and entertainment service that was released on Facebook, in August. Created by Lorraine Steyn and a team of developers, the service conveys information about what's happening in and around Johannesburg and Cape Town. The service is looking to expand to other cities next year.

The Facebook page, which has just over 10 000 likes, lists a variety of activities, including food markets, carols by candlelight events, charity dog walks, and holiday camps for kids. According to a press statement, the app is the perfect solution for busy parents who don't have time to search for information.

"The great thing with this app is that 'I'm Bored' consolidates family-friendly information and pushes notifications and content to the user through a simple and easy-to-navigate activity feed. Users can bookmark and set calendar reminders for upcoming activities that pique their interest, and a map view provides easy visualisation of what's on nearby."

For event organisers, the app offers a cost-effective marketing tool for driving awareness and attendance of events. According to the "I'm Bored" Web site, anyone can list a family-friendly public venue or event on the service for free.

Organisers can also opt for one of the paid options that offers increased promotion of events. The pilot project on Facebook has a number of proven case studies where events were listed and shared by users and, as a result, were sold out, says the statement.

The app also has a registered service provider directory so parents can look up maths tutors, ballet lessons, or playschools in their chosen geographical area.

The "I'm Bored" app is now available for download from the Google Play store, and an iOS version will be released mid-2014.
