The Nokia 5.3 midrange phone, developed by HMD Global, is now available in SA, starting at R4 999.

The smartphone, which was announced globally in March alongside the Nokia 8.3,has a number of features which HMD Global says are “Nokia firsts”, aimed at offering customers value for money. These include a quad camera, the Qualcomm Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform, paired with 3GB, 4GB or 6GB of RAM and two-day battery life.

The 4 000mAh battery and artificial intelligence (AI)-assisted adaptive battery feature enables users to stream shows and play games, without worrying about charging.

This new device is the fourth iteration of the Nokia 5 smartphone range released to date, with the brand opting for a few design changes across the line-up.

It weighs 185g and is 8.5mm thick, with a 6.55-inch HD display, which enables users to make the most out of streaming their favourite entertainment videos. Nokia 5.3 has a durable Nordic-inspired design, and comes with Android 10 to give users faster access to Google Assistantvia its dedicated button.

“The Nokia 5.3 is unique for us as it features a number of firsts for a Nokia smartphone at this price-point. Our goal with the Nokia 5.3 was to give fans a robust device, that allows them to both create and enjoy content in a different way,” says Shaun Durandt, GM for Southern Africa at HMD Global.

“Bringing an AI-powered quad camera, as well as being the first Nokia phone to use the Snapdragon 665 Mobile Platform, the Nokia 5.3 is an exciting opportunity for us to bring an entertainment and creative powerhouse to more consumers across the world.”

It is a direct competitor to Motorola’s Moto G8 and Xiaomi’s Redmi 9, which run on similar platforms and offer high-resolution cameras and better screen displays.

The Nokia 5.3 brings four rear AI-powered quad-cameras, including a 13MP lens, 5MP sensor and two 2MP lenses. The AI tools help capture high-quality images even in dim light, when set to night mode. Wide-angle and macro lenses help users capture close-up, or wide, scenic shots, according to HMD Global.

Portrait mode, combined with enhanced bokeh effects and a depth sensor, allow the image subject to pop out in portraits.

The Nokia 5.3 comes with two years of Android upgrades and three years of monthly security updates.

The device is available from select South African retailers, including Takealot, and comes in charcoal and cyan green.
