Attachmate launches next-generation Reflection Suite for X 2011 product

New release provides firewall friendliness, protection of sensitive host data and the VMware Ready logo.

Johannesburg, 04 Nov 2011

Attachmate Corporation today announced the second release of its next-generation product for the X Server market. Attachmate Reflection Suite for X 2011 R2 allows Windows users to securely access text- and graphics-based applications on Unix and Linux systems, as well as legacy applications on IBM System z mainframes and System i midranges.

Inclusion of the latest X Server technologies, next-generation terminal emulation software, and a secure file transfer client in a single deployment package, enables enterprises to seamlessly meet their host access needs during the Windows 7 migration.

Reflection Suite for X provides access to commonly-used, mission-critical applications in key vertical industries, including manufacturing, chip design, oil exploration, healthcare, telecom and banking/finance.

Reflection Suite for X 2011 provides access to these key applications from Windows, Linux, Unix and Mac desktops, and includes groundbreaking technologies that enable optimal performance over remote connections, and application-sharing with distributed workers who need to collaborate on projects.

“For more than a decade, Reflection X has proven to be a reliable solution for accessing our business-critical applications,” said Tim Burkhard, system specialist for Solaris at Swisscom IT Services in Lucerne, Switzerland. “We are pleased to see that the next version is optimised for Windows 7 and includes compelling compatibility and security features, like corporate firewall friendliness for remote users, that will meet our needs well into the future.”

During Windows 7 migrations, IT organisations also are deploying new virtualisation technologies to increase efficiencies. Reflection Suite for X provides support for the critical virtualisation platforms being adopted in the enterprise, including those from Citrix, Microsoft and VMware. Numerous Attachmate solutions have earned “Compatible with Microsoft Windows 7” status, demonstrating they have met Windows 7 technical and performance requirements, and that customers can deploy them reliably and with confidence as they migrate their systems to Windows 7.

Additionally, as part of the R2 release, Reflection Suite for X 2011 has achieved VMware Ready status. This designation indicates that Reflection Suite for X 2011 has passed a detailed evaluation and testing process managed by VMware and is now listed on the VMware Partner Product Catalogue.

This release of Reflection Suite for X 2011 provides new features that complement the product's legacy functionality with sophisticated next-generation capabilities. These new capabilities include:

* Added support for remote domain connections to be “firewall friendly”
This feature enables remote users to reliably access the corporate domain, retaining their ability to access local applications, without compromising permissions or security policies.

* Integration with Reflection for the Web (RWeb) Administrator
Administrators can now centrally manage Reflection X Advantage user configurations and Unix/Linux access, saving time and enabling dynamic, real-time updates. Additionally, end users can now launch RXA sessions from a Web page using a browser.

* Native support for 64-bit Windows 7 platform
Reflection's support for the Windows 7 64-bit platform provides better performance and scalability of applications. The product also supports 32-bit platforms.

* Inclusion of next-generation terminal emulation
Reflection Suite for X includes terminal emulation for connecting to IBM mainframes (System z), AS/400's (System i), and Unix/Linux systems (VT). Next-generation capabilities include support for the Ribbon user experience, trusted locations for locking down macro execution points and application search, among other benefits.

“As the move to Windows 7 continues in the enterprise, Reflection Suite for X 2011 enables organisations to standardise on a single solution that gives them access to virtually any type of host,” said Eric Varness, vice-president of marketing for Attachmate. “We also are pleased to have earned the VMware Ready logo, which designates VMware's highest level of endorsement for products and solutions.”

Reflection Suite for X 2011 renders rich, precise X graphics with extraordinary speed using new compression technology, and allows users to resume suspended X programs from any Java-enabled or desktop platform. Powerful, flexible, and comprehensive, this solution combines familiar legacy functionality with sophisticated next-generation capability.
