Outgoing MTN CEO Phuthuma Nhleko has been appointed as a non-executive director to the board of energy giant BP, with immediate effect.

Nhleko is currently the group president and CEO of the country's second mobile operator, MTN; but is due to step down in March.

MTN's group chief operating officer, Sifiso Dabengwa, has been named as Nhleko's successor.

Nhleko will, however, retain ties with the operator in his roles as non-executive VP of the MTN group and chairman of MTN International.

BP chairman Carl-Henric Svanberg says: “Phuthuma is an international business leader of high standing with wide-ranging business experience in emerging markets. He has built a huge business in Africa and the Middle East, with operations in a wide variety of countries.

“As barriers come down and communications improve, the emerging market economies continue to grow strongly. Phuthuma's appointment reflects the growing importance of emerging markets and their growing integration into the global economy,” he concludes.
