Huawei has revealed its latest high-end smartphone, which has three rear cameras, an in-screen fingerprint sensor, and what it claims is the fastest charger ever seen on a mainstream mobile device.

The Mate 20 Pro, along with a few more smartphones in the same range and a smartwatch, were this week unveiled by the Chinese smartphone manufacturer during an event at the ExCeL centre in London.

The 6.39-inch device is powered by a seven-nanometre chipset, the Kirin 980, which will allow the processor to operate faster while consuming less power.

There will be two ways to charge the 4 200mAh battery on board the device, either through the new 40W Supercharge wall plug that will charge a phone to 70% in 30 minutes, or a 15W output wireless charger. Huawei says the safety of the technology is certified by T"UV Rheinland.

The fingerprint sensor has been moved from a physical button and is now built into the screen, a feature first introduced with the Porsche Design Huawei Mate RS earlier this year.

The new smartphone has three rear cameras, all co-engineered with camera brand Leica: a 16mm 20MP ultra-wide angle lens, a 40MP main lens and an 8MP telephoto lens.

"Together, the trio of lenses supports a wide range of focal lengths (equivalent to the performance of a 16-270mm zoom lens), enabling it to mimic the results from professional cameras," Huawei said in a statement.

Huawei also revealed the Watch GT, a smartwatch designed to track users' activities and provide fitness coaching.

The company says the device's long battery life will set it apart from other wearables on the market.

"The Huawei Watch GT uses an innovative smart power-saving algorithm that enables it to dynamically switch between performance and efficiency modes, depending on user activity, for maximum battery life. This allows the smartwatch to stay powered for up to two weeks for frequent use mode."

The local launch for the Mate 20 Pro, as well as the Watch GT, is set for early next week, when pre-orders will open. The devices will officially go on sale in SA from 1 November.

Local pricing has not yet been revealed. The recommended retail price globally is EUR1 049 (around R17 200) for the smartphone and EUR249 (around R4 000) but the prices here are expected to be much higher due to import taxes and shipping.
