With the Truemessenger app, spam messages are sent to a separate folder to give users a clean inbox.

Truecaller has added a messaging function to its app to block and filter SMS spam from the inbox.

Truecaller is the mobile app that enables users to identify unknown incoming calls and block calls they do not want to receive. Its messaging app, Truemessenger, is integrated with Truecaller and its network of more than 1.7 billion numbers from across the globe.

Truemessenger works by pulling information from social networks and automatically assigns photos, nicknames, and other contact information to incoming texts. SMS spam is then filtered out of the inbox or blocked altogether, according to a statement.

"We are in the middle of the Wild West in terms of spam messages we receive on our mobile phones, and despite the evolution of services in other areas, little has been done to curb the number of spam messages we receive on a daily basis," says Alan Mamedi, CEO and co-founder of Truecaller.

The company notes that in the African market, SMS is still the most used messaging tool, which makes it a prime target for telemarketers and fraudsters.

Truemessenger will give users an organised inbox in which they can always put a name to a number, allowing them to block and filter spam SMS messages.

Mamedi says with the global rollout of Truemessenger, users will no longer have to worry about SMSes from anonymous numbers.

The Truemessenger app is available free on Google Play.
