ITWeb Brainstorm CIO Banquet 2025

Faced with geopolitical uncertainty, a fast-evolving cyber landscape, AI exploding at an unprecedented pace, and businesses demanding the tools to innovate, the CIO must operate in an increasingly complex and challenging environment. With an expectation to influence corporate strategy, the CIO’s role has evolved from simply being the ‘techie’ in the room, to having a wide-ranging portfolio of influence and understanding across the organisation. Still, they must balance technological aspects such as data management, infrastructure requirements and cost implications, with business stakeholders clamouring to have their own generative AI solution, and the ethical and regulatory concerns about introducing AI into the business. A rapid pace of change is also inherent in the cybersecurity landscape, where AI is fuelling increased sophistication and variation of attack vectors. While some organisations have installed a CISO, not all have, and even where they have, chances are the CISO reports to the CIO (as per the findings of Brainstorm’s 2025 CISO Survey). The CIO’s challenges are further exacerbated by the geopolitical uncertainty and its impact on data and technology sovereignty, supply chains and the wider economy and business environment. And, of course, the digital transformation journey continues for many CIOs, who are helping transition their organisations into a digital world, where cloud and apps become as important as warehouses and offices.

Undoubtedly, the role of the CIO is in constant flux. ITWeb Brainstorm has, for over a decade, been tracking many of the challenges faced by South Africa’s CIOs through the annual edition of its CIO Survey. This research samples the thoughts and opinions of the country’s top technology decision-makers and collates them to provide clarity on areas of priority and focus and highlights the key trends and challenges CIOs face.

The preliminary results of the 2025 CIO Survey are to be released at the prestigious ITWeb Brainstorm CIO Banquet, which will be held on Thursday, 16 October at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg. The exclusive audience will include many of the country’s top ICT decision-makers and industry leaders.

The banquet is a must-attend for the South African CIO community, thanks to its blend of fine dining, high-level networking, and top-notch entertainment. This is, of course, all complemented by the delivery of the insights from the CIO Survey.

CIO Survey 2025

The ITWeb Brainstorm CIO Survey, run in partnership with MTN Business, is now in its 16th year.

The survey captures input from CIOs, or equivalent C-level execs, and results in an exclusive research report that provides unique insights into technology strategies of SA's top private and public sector organisations.

The comparative data from previous years enables ITWeb Brainstorm to track shifting priorities and investment trends and allows for deep vertical sector analyses.

The key findings of the 2025/2026 survey will be revealed at the annual ITWeb Brainstorm CIO Banquet, which will take place at Four Seasons Hotel The Westcliff, Johannesburg on Thursday, 16 October 2025.

The full research report will be published on ITWeb and Brainstorm online in early 2026. The report is available free of charge to all valid survey respondents.
