Stephen Smith is a 17+ year veteran of Micro Focus and HPE Software. He has enjoyed a multi-faceted career in the IT world. He has learned things he never dreamt he would, met people he never dreamt he would and been places he never dreamt he would.
He started in the IT industry in the days of the Mainframe in the mid-1980s. Since then he has evolved through Client Server technology, different operating systems like Netware and Linux, then on to Networks in support and design roles, then on to Security working with Firewall and encryption technology. Then on to HP where he has worked in the Software Presales arena initially in the OpenView solution suite. His focus was on IT Management but it expanded and changed as the HP Software portfolio grew over the years. The portfolio was very aligned with ITILv2 but with HP being very involved with the development of ITIL v3 which expanded into the Service Strategy and Development areas there was a gap which got filled with the acquisition of Mercury International. So his focus changed again to the Application development and testing side of the HP Software solutions.
The last 6-8 years has seen the formulation and growth of things like IT4IT and DevOps. These have been a keen interest for him and he has moved into consulting for MicroFocus at customers who are looking to increase agility and to develop DevOps practices within their organisations.
This year he will be celebrating his 33rd wedding anniversary. He has a wonderful wife who puts up with his moods. They are blessed with 4 grown up children who find themselves in all sorts of fields. One works as an engineer at the SKA, one as a Java developer for Nedbank, one as an aircraft mechanic and the last as an English teacher in Thailand.
Stephen has many other interests outside of work. He enjoys riding his motorcycle, relaxing with family, playing with his Nikon cameras, working on cars, watching MotoGP racing and trying to keep up with his children who are far superior to him in every way.
