deCarta, TomTom Africa sign distribution deal

TomTom Africa has signed an exclusive distribution agreement with independent location based solutions (LBS) technology company, deCarta.

The agreement, effective immediately and spanning all of Africa, will see TomTom Africa providing an integrated digital mapping offering running on deCarta's acclaimed LBS platform which currently features over 30 million users across the world.

According to a company statement, deCarta's highly integratable LBS platform allows for development on J2ME, Android, iOS and desktop/mobile Javascript. The company recently made available the L2 Geospatial search engine, a high-performance, scalable local search engine with single-line input and a simpler, more intuitive user interface.

"We are delighted to extend our relationship with TomTom Africa," says deCarta CEO J Kim Fennell. "The company has proven the value of bringing fully integrated solutions to its customers, combining the very best in content, platform and applications know-how."

The deCarta agreement will make it possible for companies operating in Africa to have free access, during the development phase, to a wide range of LBS application programming interfaces and services. TomTom Africa will then provide hosting services for its production applications.

Etienne Louw, sales and marketing director at TomTom Africa, adds that the TomTom portfolio - including digital maps as well as the most accurate real-time and historical traffic products - effectively sees the company entering a new era in the provision international value offering to the African market.

"Together with deCarta - the world's foremost LBS provider - it greatly enhances our digital mapping services to our customers."

Integrates indoor mapping

Meanwhile, TomTom will be entering into a strategic partnership with worldwide indoor mapping company Micello, extending its range of mapping products to include indoor venues.

"The indoor mapping functionality means that step-by-step guidance can be integrated into daily life for a wide variety of venues, including shopping malls, airports and retail stores," says Charles Cautley, MD at TomTom Maps. "By partnering with Micello, our customers can now develop smarter apps and locations-based services, helping them navigate with ease in and out of the car."

CEO of Micello Ankit Agarwal adds that his company is excited to be partnering with TomTom. "Our agreement means that TomTom's business customers can use our indoor venue maps and incorporate the content into their automotive, online or mobile solutions."

Integrating Micello's maps and venue content gives TomTom's business customers access to accurate pedestrian-friendly indoor maps with points of interest data in venues worldwide.
