ICL, Fujikura to make inroads into southern Africa

By acquiring the distribution rights for Fujikura's splicers and testing and certification systems, ICL can offer a turnkey fibre-optic telecommunications solution.

Johannesburg, 20 Jun 2019

American Fujikura (AFL), a subsidiary of Fujikura Japan, was formed on 28 November 1984. Fujikura has been in business for over 130 years and is one of the oldest manufacturers of cables and wires in Japan. Fujikura's long history started at almost the same time as the origin of the telegraph and electricity. Throughout Fujikura's history, telecommunications has been a core business, making significant contributions to Fujikura’s growth.

AFL specialises in many fields, including automotive wire harnesses, electronic parts, fibre cable, laser technologies, education, field-connectors, test and certification equipment, etc. It is known for its specialised OPGW (optical ground wire) division, which was purchased from Draka in 2009.

IC Logistix (ICL), an importer and distributor of specialised technology and equipment, was founded in May 2011 when an opportunity opened to attain the distribution rights for Fujikura’s popular range of splicer equipment for the fibre-optic telecommunications market in southern Africa.

In 2019, ICL acquired the full distributor rights for AFL's Test and Certification Department for southern Africa. “The product range fits in perfectly with our Fujikura splice machines,” said Zach Yacumakis, managing director of ICL. “The combination of Fujikura and AFL allows us to offer a turnkey solution.”

Among ICL's offerings to contractors in the telecommunications industry are splicing, testing, certification, floating and specialised tools. ICL also offers local after-sales service at its certified state-of-the-art laboratory in Ferndale.

Fujikura and AFL products are calibrated and repaired by the company's factory-trained technicians.

AFL products feature brilliant new offerings, such as the very portable FlexScan-FS200 OTDR solution and the new and powerful FlexScan-FS300 solution. All OTDR equipment is available in different wavelength combinations and configurations to customise customer needs. Wavelengths include single, duel, tri-wave as well as QUAD arrangements. Configuration combinations include the choice of onboard VFL (visual fault locator), OPM (optical power meter), OLS (optical light source), etc.

OTDR features include SMARTAUTO, LINKMAP, Bluetooth and WiFi, VFL, OPM, WAVE ID, FOCUS DUEL, TRM 2.0/3.0 Test Results Manager reporting software, PON, POINT-TO-POINT, etc. AFL also launched its innovative FLEXPRESS 10x Faster technology recently. It features full dual-wavelength testing in under five seconds.

Other AFL products include: loss-test kits, connector inspections systems, cleaning kits, one-click cleaners, etc. Workflow technology includes ROGUE and AEROS modular systems.
