Security specialists Nclose and Tessian are set to host a webinar in partnership with ITWeb, focusing on overcoming the shortcomings of traditional, static data loss prevention.

Stephen Osler, business development director at Nclose, says: “Static policies don’t give an understanding of context, answering why a person is engaging with data. Typically, they ask four questions – who is the person interacting with the data, what the data is depending on its classification, how the person is interacting with the data, and where they are sending it to. However, there is a fifth question – why? – which is never answered in terms of traditional policies.”

“If you don’t ask the ‘why’ question, static policies will stop people interacting with data, causing resistance and potentially hampering collaboration. It can also generate large volumes of false positives, causing alert fatigue which then increases the risk of data loss because businesses eventually turn them off.”

George Vasey, partnerships manager at Tessian, says dynamic data security which addresses the ‘why’ guards more effectively against accidental and intentional data loss.

“Tessian protects data in a more intelligent, automated and proactive way, requiring less admin to set up complex policies and enforce and remediate any issues that arise," says Vasey.

"Tessian has been feeding data into our algorithms for years to make them more intelligent, so they deeply understand normal behaviour across the organisation and can identify any anomalies. For example, if an employee has attached the wrong file to an email or accidentally typed the wrong email address Tessian would provide a contextual warning giving a reason why we believe the attachment or mail or recipient is incorrect,” he says.

“Tessian protects against accidental data loss and intentional data loss and is extending to other applications next year. We have also recently released an intelligent policy engine to further mitigate the risk of data loss.”

Webinar: Dynamic Data Security
9 November at 14:00 (GMT+2)

The webinar on dynamic data security on 9 November will outline the trends and challenges in data loss prevention, new dynamic approaches to data loss prevention and the use of machine learning to automatically and proactively protect against human layer threats.

The event will also outline high-level findings of the new ITWeb Data Loss Survey carried out in partnership with Nclose and Tessian, assessing the impact of POPIA on data loss prevention efforts, and what South African organisations’ biggest data loss concerns are.
