While the “things” in the Internet of things benefit businesses, homes, factories, and cities, on the flip side, these devices can also introduce blind spots and risks in the form of vulnerabilities.
And vulnerabilities can be exploited, opening up networks to attacks, and can weaken the overall security of the Internet itself.
To delve into this topic, world-renowned Finnish security expert Mikko Hyppönen will be presenting an international keynote address at the ITWeb Security Summit 2023, to be held from 6 to 8 June at the Sandton Convention Centre.
Hyppönen, who is the chief research officer at WithSecure, is known for the Hyppönen Law, which states that if a device is described as being "smart", it is vulnerable.
He says companies are facing new kinds of online risks. “Headlines are full of examples of data breaches, data leaks, and malware outbreaks. Ransomware seems to be everywhere.” What matters today, is how fast an entity can detect a breach, and how quickly they can recover.
“As connectivity opens new opportunities for imagination, it also opens new opportunities for online attackers,” says Hyppönen.
