Dr Barry Devlin is among the foremost authorities on business insight and one of the founders of data warehousing, having published the first architectural paper on the topic in 1988. With over 30 years of IT experience, including 20 years with IBM, he is a widely respected analyst, consultant, lecturer and author of "Data Warehouse-from Architecture to Implementation", and numerous white papers. His most recent book, "Business unIntelligence-Insight and Innovation beyond Analytics and Big Data", was published earlier this year.

He specialises in the human, organisational and IT implications of deep business insight solutions that combine operational, informational and collaborative environments. He is a regular contributor to BeyeNETWORK, SmartDataCollective and TWDI.

It's an old debate, often seen as stale and academic. But the difference between data and information becomes more important by the day as the volumes of data gathered about us exceeds what we know ourselves. Whether it is business such as Google or Amazon, or government at home or abroad, data feeds algorithms that determine how we treat, or are treated as, customers and citizens.
