The City of Tshwane has expanded its free WiFi initiative to include commuters, allowing them to connect on board the new bus rapid transit system A Re Yeng.
According to technology partner Project Isizwe, buses come equipped with connection to 250MB of free WiFi per device per day, allowing commuters to access the Internet for a variety of purposes.
The non-profit organisation says free hubs distributed throughout Tshwane have already connected nearly 300 000 unique users this year.
"This innovative system makes use of the Radwin Mobility Solution, with more than 9km of fibre-optic cable strung along the route, creating a dedicated high-speed backhaul for the Radwin base stations," Project Isizwe added.
On the buses, a Radwin Vehicular Mobile Unit connects to the mobility wireless canopy and provides backhaul to the Ruckus Wireless R300 access point. This in turn provides the 'Tshwane Free WiFi' to end-user devices.
Free connectivity is currently only available on the route which runs between Pretoria and Hatfield. The city has focused on expanding the project this year, adding more than 200 connected sites to its network since July.
James Devine, CIO of Project Isizwe, says the city aims to include more routes as part of its commuter connectivity drive.
Data consumption has been steady, according to Project Isizwe, with around 34TB consumed last month, compared to 33TB in September and 37TB throughout October.
