Sony's latest mid-range Xperia E4 is set to launch in SA next quarter.

Sony Mobile has introduced its latest smartphone, the Xperia E4, which it positions as one of its most affordable mid-range handsets with "big screen entertainment" and "powerful battery performance".

The Xperia E4, which succeeds the budget Xperia E3, is set to launch in SA in the second quarter of this year and retail pricing will be announced closer to launch timing. The E3 retails for around R1 800. A dual-SIM version of the Xperia E4 will also be available, through selected outlets.

The latest E-series handset features a five-inch quad high-definition display, 2 300mAh battery featuring Ultra Stamina Mode, a 5MP camera (with four times digital zoom) and a 2MP front-facing camera.

Performance-wise, the phone offers a 1.3GHz Quad-core processor and 1GB of RAM. The Xperia E4 has 8GB of storage.

The phone will be available in black and white. It has a textured surface, curved OmniBalance design and a scratch-resistant screen.

Tom McNulty, VP of value category business management at Sony Mobile, says the company focused on ease of use - at a "highly competitive price point" - with the Xperia E4. "With a simple set-up, two-day battery life, we've created an on-the-go entertainment device."

The company says it has also worked on making seamless migration from other Android, iOS or BlackBerry devices "super quick". "The Xperia Transfer app allows you to move contacts, photos, bookmarks, apps, music, messages and more without the worry of losing anything important."
