Alcatel One Touch - one of the companies behind emerging market smartphones - is making a comeback under its own brand with the launch of a range of low- to high-end devices that it hopes will plug a gap in the local market.

The brand - under mother company TCL Communication - is hitting the local market with a series of smartphones designed to service SA's aspirational market, among others.

Three new high-end smartphones - Alcatel Idols Ultra, Alcatel Idols Mini and Alcatel Hero - will be available within the next few months. All of these, says the company, come at a lower price than their Samsung and Apple counterparts.

Within the next two weeks, Alcatel is also set to launch a sub-R200 feature phone - the Alcatel One Touch 3 000. Stepping up from that is Alcatel's One Touch Pixi - retailing at around R700.

Ernst Wittmann, country manager at Alcatel One Touch SA, says the company aspires to be an A-brand again. "If Huawei can do it, with the marketing campaignthey have launched to revive the brand, why can't we?"

Future plans include a long-term evolution phone, which will retail at around R3 000, says Wittmann.
