E*telpal mania grips Bloemfontein schools

Johannesburg, 03 Jun 2003

The increasingly popular Telkom interactive youth Web site, www.etelpal.co.za, has hit the roads of Bloemfontein this week in a drive geared to attract more e*telpals.

The week-long road show, which began on Monday, is focusing on several schools in an around Bloemfontein to woo more young people to take part in e*telpals` educational exercise.

The e*telpal Web site has generated widespread interest among the youth since it was launched by Telkom last year.

Lekhulong Secondary School and St Bernard`s High School were some of the schools visited, and both are part of the Telkom Foundation`s initiative to improve the quality of mathematics, science and technology education in needy schools.

"By working with the Telkom Foundation, whose many projects include supplying disadvantaged schools with computers and the Internet, Telkom hopes to bring e*telpal to all the children of SA, and introduce them to the importance of technology and education for the future," said Telkom Corporate Communication Senior Manager, Ingrid Krige.

Other schools visited as part of the e*telpal road show were:

* St Michaels School
* Grey College Secondary School
* Grey College Primary School
* Sand Du Plessis Primary School
* Fichardtpark Primary School
* Louis Botha Technical High School
* Ho"erskool Jim Fouche

Remarked one of the teachers during one of the visits: "www.etelpals.co.za is a user-friendly Web site. Telkom has definitely created a great medium in education - it is amazing."

Another teacher added: "The visuals and features are great, attracting users` interest into the site. The content is interesting and educational, and the incentive programme is fantastic. One positive aspect is that the children are able to chat with one another in a secure and safe environment. I will definitely be encouraging my learners to use the e*telpal Web site."

To further extend this exciting development to the youth, e*telpals recently introduced a new and innovative incentive programme to reward e*telpals for their commitment to the site.

The Bloemfontein e*telpal leg will culminate in a promotion at Mimosa Shopping Centre on Friday, 30 May 2003 and Saturday, 31 May 2003. During the e*telpal Road Show, schoolchildren have been encouraged to register on the site and to become part of the e*telpal world. They have also stood the chance of receiving awesome e*telpal branded goodies such as rulers, pencil cases, t-shirts and a lot more.

At Mimosa Shopping Centre, children will have the opportunity to visit the e*telpal stand, where they will have access to http://www.etelpal.co.za/. Here they will be guided as they register as e*telpals, shown how to navigate the site, introduced to the exciting e*shop and stand a chance of receiving loads of goodies.

http://www.etelpal.co.za/ promotes communication, education and the learning experience through technology. It also features a broad spectrum of interactive elements. To find out more about e*telpals, visit the Web site.
