Getting the best of reputation management, cost efficiency

Image is everything in an increasingly competitive market, says Nosipho Simelane, category manager for printing at HP South Africa.

Johannesburg, 19 Feb 2014

When your company's image matters, yet cost controls are important too, it makes sense to segment your print workload in a way that meets both goals, says HP.

Nosipho Simelane, HP South Africa category manager for printing, says image is everything in an increasingly competitive market.

"When you're submitting tenders, producing sales packs, providing quotes and preparing letters on company letterheads, naturally, you need to be printing your documents on good quality paper, using the best possible printer. The difference between documents printed on a high end printer and a low end printer, or one using a generic cartridge, is very clear. Using inferior quality printers and toner cartridges can result in smudged, blurred copies, and even prints that shed fine, dark powder. This reflects badly on the company that produced the document."

However, colour prints are admittedly more costly to produce than mono prints, she says. "This is why HP still brings to market both colour and mono versions of even our high end enterprise grade printers," says Simelane. "By segmenting the print workload and reserving the mono machines for internal documents such as memos, spreadsheets, draft documents and meeting minutes, enterprises can realise significant savings when printing documents not intended for public viewing." The cost per page on mono prints is around one-tenth of the cost per page on colour prints.

Simelane highlights two new HP devices launched recently - the HP LaserJet Enterprise flow MFP M830 and the HP Color LaserJet Enterprise flow MFP M880. "These high end enterprise printers not only allow for faster, better quality prints, they also support mobile printing and cloud-based collaboration, while reducing the total cost of ownership through advanced power saving technology and reduced risk of misprints and paper jams," she says. "And because the devices are available in mono and colour versions, the enterprise is able to control costs by using the appropriate device for internal and external documents."

allow users to print, copy, scan and fax from one easy-to-use device, eliminating the expense of
multiple single-function devices. They also feature a retractable keyboard and 8-inch touchscreen display for on-device document viewing and print management, with an optional two-bin stacker/stapler, booklet maker and hole punch output. Users can print from mobile devices using wireless direct, touch-to-print and HP e-print or AirPrint, with content secured with 128-bit SSL encryption of files and optional PIN user authentication for mobile print jobs.

Designed for use in large enterprises printing 25 000 pages or more per month, the new devices enable better print environment cost controls on a number of fronts, says Simelane. "In addition to their Energy Star energy saving features, such as a standby mode that consumes as little as 1W, the new MFPs are designed to simplify workflow and enhance efficiency in the workplace, which translates into bottom line benefits. In a large enterprise, better control over the print environment, lower power consumption and enhanced efficiency can make a tangible difference to overall cost of ownership," she notes.
