Local graphic novel project - Kariba - which launched a 30-day crowdfunding campaign on Kickstarter looking to raise $20 000, got funding in just 41 hours.

"Kariba has been funded in 41 hours. Thank you everyone," the team behind the graphic novel says.

Kariba has attracted a total of $22 743 with 423 backers, although there are still 27 days to go on the campaign.

The campaign has also received a shot in the arm from Cape Town's Triggerfish Animation Studios, which pledged to match 50% of the funds raised.

The graphic novel was created by a group of Cape Town-based artists and animators - Blue Forest Collective - which comprises director Daniel Clarke, story editor Daniel Snaddon, animation director Jac Hamman, and digital strategist Sarah Scrimgeour.

"We were completely overwhelmed by the support, and are thrilled that we're off to such a great start," says Snaddon.

Set in Zimbabwe, Kariba interweaves history and mythology through a retelling of the embattled construction of the Kariba Dam in the 1950s.

The team aims to deliver a 100+ page graphic novel, available on a limited edition pre-order basis in both hardcover and softcover. The graphic novel currently in the works will serve both as a first draft script and design development for the eventual film.

"We've all been hugely inspired by the works of Miyazaki, Fr'ed'eric Back, Micha"el Dudok de Wit, Tomm Moore and Satoshi Kon. The sense of wonder their films have evoked in us make us excited about creating something in Africa that might do the same for a global audience," says Clarke.
