Sage offers SMEs free software

In a bid to keep the entrepreneurial momentum going, Sage is to give its TAS Books Basic and Quickpay free to start-ups and small businesses, says Silicon Republic.

“We at Sage have been thinking about how we can help in the current recession, and it is very clear that there are lots of jobs being lost and hence lots of people that may have ideas about setting up a small business,” explained Liam Mullaney, MD, Sage Ireland.

“We think we can help here, and we have identified two of our business software applications that could be made available absolutely free to new start-up and small businesses,” he said.

Dell bundles OSS for SMEs

Dell is planning to offer SMEs globally pre-configured bundles of hardware and open source software to run their businesses, according to an executive at the company, reports PC World.

There is a definite shift from proprietary to open source software among SMEs, particularly as companies in this sector look to cut costs, said Amit Midha, president of Dell's Asia-Pacific and Japan region for the SME business.

"The more advanced the customers, the more likely they will adopt open source, because they are likely to ask why they should spend money on something they can get free," he added.
