Sybase offers certification courses for Red Hat Enterprise Linux

Johannesburg, 18 May 2005

Sybase SA, a Red Hat Linux certified training partner, today announced its certification offering for the recently released Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) version 4. IT professionals can now enrol in either of the Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE) and Red Hat Certified Technician (RHCT) Linux certification programmes on offer by Sybase.

"Linux's impact in the server field is generating massive demand for certified Linux professionals and already this is reflected in the growing interest in Linux training and certification," says Arn'el Taute, Sybase SA's Training Manager.

While jobs in the IT industry are numerous, they do require well-defined skill sets that require intensive training and hands-on experience. Employers have found it difficult to properly gauge employee skill levels during the hiring process and are increasingly turning to vendor certifications as a benchmark on which to judge a potential employee's skills.

"The primary goal of RHCE and RHCT certifications is to provide proof of a professional's capability to work with the vendor tools that the professional is qualified in," says Taute.

The RHCE certificate is granted only upon successful passing of the RHCE exam. This exam measures a person's competencies in server system administration, set-up of networking services and network security, and diagnostics and troubleshooting. The RHCT exam, on the other hand, tests performance in installing and configuring a Red Hat Linux system.

According to Taute, the main benefits of training and certification include the ability to keep pace with the ever-changing nature of technology, being able to prove that you have the knowledge and skill to support the technology and being part of a community directly supported by manufacturers. Additionally, the higher the level of certification, the better the compensation employees can expect and the better the job performance employers can count on.

"Hands-on experience is very important before taking the Red Hat certification exams, as the exams are lab-based and tests real-world knowledge," she says. "Learning to apply what has been learned in the classroom to solve real-life problems enhances a trainee's ability to use different products and retain the methodologies, concepts and technical skills they have learned."

It is advisable for professionals who are not sure which of the certification programs to enrol for, to complete Sybase's pre-assessment questionnaire. "This questionnaire will assess which course is most applicable to your requirements and existing knowledge," says Taute.

The Red Hat Linux certification courses, exams and pre-assessment questionnaires are available through the Sybase Johannesburg Training Centre on Tel: 011 804 3740 or www.sybase.co.za/redhat.
