Vodacom has introduced a new, low-cost smartphone, running on the Android operating system, in a bid to include those who are “missing out on the smartphone journey”.

The cellphone operator announced on Friday that the Vodafone Smart II - available from Vodacom World and other participating outlets as of yesterday - is available on a special launch deal, on the Top Up 99 Yebo4Less package, at R79 per month. “The recommended selling price on prepaid is R1 299. Prepaid pricing may vary at the retail outlets,” says Vodacom.

Zunaid Dinath, chief officer of sales and distribution, says Vodacom's focus is to bring affordable smartphones to the market at price points attractive to a large number of people, who are not using smartphones today. “The Vodafone Smart II will allow this new wave of customers access to a new world of applications and the mobile Internet.”

The Vodafone Smart II comes with three coloured back cover rims and three coloured back plates. It has the following features: a new Broadcom 21552 chipset with 832MHz processor and 512MB of RAM; high-speed 3G HSDPA and WiFi connectivity; 3.2MP camera with white LED flash; and the latest Assisted GPS technology for rapid and accurate mapping and navigation functions.
