VOIP attacks and hacking: reality or myth?

We don't need the "Myth Busters" or "Ghostbusters" for this one.

Pretoria, 23 May 2014

The Question is how?

It is a very difficult question to answer, it's all about money, power and fame.

Cyber crime is so lucrative and alive it has created an industry of hackers who sell their malicious services on a contract basis around the globe and it is growing by the day like a dangerous virus out to destroy everything in its way... Reality!

Hacking into your VoIP or UC sessions the malicious party needs to intercept signaling and or media flowing between two endpoints at any of several points along the communications path... Reality!

An attacker can modify or discard critical financial transactions, disrupt business operations or reduce the quality of customer service.

What can we do to stop this, why exposing your network in the core?

Everyone protects its Data and internet with firewalls etc... But what about your voice and video?

The Sonus SBC 5110 and 5210 is the answer in the Core.

For years, the world's largest service providers and enterprises have relied on Sonus session border controllers (SBCs) for secure SIP-based communications.

The SBC 5110/5210 is the gatekeeper to the VOIP network in an enterprise or in a service provider network.

In this role, it performs a task known as session admissions control. Session admissions control is the process of determining who has access to the network and who doesn't.

The SBC is the traffic cop of a VOIP network, keeping your VOIP highways safe and orderly and creating and accessing three lists - whitelists, blacklists and greylists.

Now, smaller service providers and enterprises have a reason to rejoice: the Sonus SBC 5100.

The SBC 5100 delivers many of the industry-leading capabilities of the Sonus SBC 5200 - robust security, flexible SIP session routing & policy management, media transcoding - at a more attractive price/performance point for Tier 2/3 service providers and medium-to-large enterprises (250 to 10 000 concurrent sessions).

With high-end features you won't find in other "mid-sized" SBCs, the SBC 5100 allows regional service providers and medium-to-large enterprises to deliver a world-class communications experience.

A word from the MD of VOD Communications:

Hanro Wentzel, MD from VOD Communications stated: "The Sonus SBC 5110 and SBC 5210 'hide' the topology and network addresses of devices "inside" the enterprise network) you don't want everyone coming in and making calls from your IP PBX..."
