Can satellite imagery and artificial intelligence modernise wildlife surveys in Africa?

Johannesburg, 16 Mar 2023

This study investigates the feasibility of using artificial intelligence (AI) techniques and satellite images in wildlife surveys.

The project aimed to test all three approaches, with wildlife sightings reported by field teams around the time of satellite pass-over. Although the results show promise, significant challenges in using these methods remain. This paper validates their ongoing value, particularly in more heterogeneous environments, and gives suggestions for future research.
