Peeple, the controversial people-rating app, has been revamped and will be released today.

Its creators describe the Peeple app as a "social-networking reputation app where your character is your currency". It is meant to help users make better decisions about the people around them, based on 'reviews'.

Last year, its founders came under fire for creating an app that lets users 'rate' other people on an open social media platform. There were concerns from all corners of the Web that this would lead to cyber bullying, open defamation issues and could potentially be breaking privacy laws.

After widespread negative media attention, the release date of the app was postponed from last November to today.

The new app now allows users to 'recommend' instead of 'rate' in the same categories as before: professional, personal, and dating. Users will only be able to recommend other users on the app and users can control what recommendations show on their profile.

"Peeple creates a positive, supportive community, where non-anonymous, honest feedback is central and you have control over your profile," the company said in a statement.

However, a feature coming soon will allow users to pay to access all recommendations.

This feature is called the Truth Licence and, "shows you everything that has been written about a person whether it was published live on their profile or not. This allows you to make better decisions about the people around you by getting access to all the recommendations written," said the company.

The app is available today in the US and Canada from the Apple app store. Android and other regions will follow.
