New GM for IBM South Africa

Johannesburg, 06 Oct 2000

IBM is pleased to announce the appointment of Mark Harris as IBM General Manager for South Africa. Mark Harris is currently the Operations Director for the company, and has served in several senior positions during a 19 year career with IBM SA.

"This move is in line with IBM`s global practice of placing local executives in top positions in country organisations," says Johann Weihen, IBM General Manager for Central and Eastern Europe, the Middle East and Africa. "This completes the transition of the company to a local subsidiary with a South African at the helm, begun when IBM made a significant investment in the country in 1994."

Dennis Hearon, the current General Manager, has been at the helm of the South African operation for more than two years. "IBM SA is now ideally positioned to provide our customers with the best business solutions and services that will help South Africa compete successfully in the e-business era of the global economy. I am pleased to hand over this responsibility to an outstanding South African executive. I have had the pleasure of working side by side with Mark during my entire stay in South Africa. I am confident the company is in good hands," he says.

"I look forward to the challenge and to continuing Dennis` initiatives, positioning IBM in the local marketplace at the forefront of the IT environment," says Mark Harris.

Mark Harris` appointment is effective immediately. Dennis Hearon will remain in South Africa for an effective handover period to ensure a smooth transition of leadership.
