World`s fastest dot matrix printer announced

Johannesburg, 06 Jul 1998

Venture Computer, the sole distributor in South Africa for Tally Printer Corp., a leading designer and manufacturer of high performance printers for business and industrial applications, today announced the world`s fastest impact dot matrix printer.

The new T6180, at 1800 lines per minute (lpm), is the world`s fastest in this technology with a monthly workload of 318,000 pages. The T6180 is designed to accommodate the most demanding applications such as long, unattended runs of reports, invoices or bar-code labels, in areas such as accounting, manufacturing, shipping or direct mail. It is faster than other printers available on the market today, with the quiet 52 dB(A) operation required in corporate environments.

"The T6180 breaks new ground in line impact matrix printing" stated Richard Fearon, sales and marketing director at Venture Computer. "At 1800 LPM, this is the best solution for companies requiring top speed, low cost of operation and high reliability. It is an ideal replacement for lower speed serial impact or line impact matrix printers. As an alternative to fully formed character line printers, it offers superior font flexibility and functionality".

At 1800 LPM, the T6180 is nearly 30% faster than 1400 LPM printers on the market today. This unprecedented print speed combines innovations specifically geared for maximum throughput. First, a proprietary controller provides significant advancements in data management, featuring a "Page Segment Architecture" to intelligently arrange data into page "segments" prior to printing, thus eliminating the need for time-consuming forms reversal, since, text and graphics are printed in just one pass. In addition, the T6180 features a dual dot row hammer bank that prints two rows of dots simultaneously in the time it takes a conventional printer to print one. A constant density font mode is also available whereby characters at 10, 12, 13, 15, and 17 CPI print at 1800 LPM.

The T6180 handles 6-part forms and prints a line up to 13.6" wide. A new platen position sensor and high torque dual motor paper drive system boost energy for heavy form control. Stability, tension and high slew speeds are achieved by four tractors (each with six steel pins), a precise forms tension lever, a forms thickness "helm" wheel, and a new four point shuttle mount. Conductive platen supports, serving as brush replacements, dissipate static for jam-free, unattended operation.

The T6180 exemplifies engineering ingenuity. A streamlined power system outputs a single voltage. Hammer coils are double insulated and monitored for current consumption while a distributed cooling system is monitored by firmware. In addition to speed, hammer bank redundancy brings greater reliability to this already highly reliable technology. In the unlikely event of a failure, printing is able to continue with no loss of print quality. Firmware updates are easily made through flash memory via the printers I/O.

Because of the critical need for readability of text, numbers, and bar codes, sharp text and numbers in the smallest sizes are produced by a proprietary, injection-moulded impact element engineered specifically for uniform, solid dot creation. Combined with Tally`s exclusive Read/Right bar-code algorithm and an extremely stiff frame, hammer bank carriage and platen, this element also produces high quality bar codes and graphics.

The T6180 comes standard with auto switching parallel and serial interfaces and easily adapts to a variety of environments. FourPlex (with or without IPDS), LANPlex, and Extended Parallel interfaces equip the T6180 to function fully with PC`s, IBM midrange/mainframe systems or networks. All interfaces are user installable and all ports are hot. Standard graphic features include both QMS Code V and PGL languages as well as POSTNET bar code. The T6180 also emulates twelve popular printer models for versatility.
