Vodacom has launched a low-cost Android smartphone, available for both prepaid and contract customers, the Smart 4 mini.

The new smartphone - now available for the recommended retail price of R899 and from R69 per month on contract - is a Vodafone product and has a four-inch capacitive touch-screen, dual-core 1.3GHz processor and the latest version of the Android Jelly Bean operating system (4.2.2).

This comes about three months after arch rival MTN brought a sub-R500 smartphone to market, the Steppa - a 3.5-inch Android device, featuring FM radio and a 2MP camera.

Vodacom says the Smart 4 mini gives customers fast access to videos, music and apps "at a fraction of the price of high-end devices". The Smart 4 mini also features a range of Vodafone services, including Vodafone Cloud.

Other features include an FM radio, 3.2MP camera, a 1400mAH Lithium-ion battery, an internal memory of 4GB and a memory card slot that can add up to 32GB of memory.

Prepaid Smart 4 mini customers will receive 250MB of data on activation and then a further 250MB whenever they recharge with R29 or more for six months.

Customers who purchase the device on contract will receive an additional 100MB for 24 months.

Vodacom says the phone was designed to give a broad range of customers access to mobile Internet, at an affordable price.
