IBM's FlashSystem 840 available for POC projects through First Distribution

First Distribution, SA's leading distributor for datacentre and enterprise solutions, now has an IBM FlashSystem 840 available for use in partner proof-of-concept (POC) projects.

Cape Town, 07 Jul 2014

First Distribution's partnership with IBM, combined with its expertise in POC projects, allows the distributor to assist partners with fundamental prerequisites, such as pre-site surveys, environmental viability studies and individual product positioning in order to ensure an effective product fit.

First Distribution actively encourages proof of concept (POC) projects with customers. A POC conducted in a customer's environment allows potential stumbling blocks to be identified and successfully negotiated, leading to a fully optimised solution. It also emphasises the benefits of the product concerned and often highlights the potential return on investment encountered by utilising such technology.

IBM's FlashSystem 840 storage unit, available for such POC projects through First Distribution, is data centre-optimised to deliver extreme performance, flexible capacity and total system protection.

Resellers which are interested in conducting POC projects with their customers are encouraged to contact Mohammed on (011) 540 2640 or ibmstorage@firstdistribution.co.za.

Some of the IBM FlashSystem's 840 storage unit's highlights include:

* Supports more concurrent users, improves query response times, shortens batch processes, accelerates backups and lowers virtual desktop costs with all-flash storage.
* Improves IT economics by improving server efficiency with IBM MicroLatency data accesses.
* Reduces IT waste with extreme-performance, high-density, energy-efficient flash storage.
* Integrates with existing infrastructure with support for Fibre Channel, iSCSI, InfiniBand, and FCOE interfaces.
* Expanded capacity and performance incrementally to match changing requirements.
* Improved availability with IBM Variable Stripe RAID, redundant and hot-swappable components and concurrent code load.

IBM named by Gartner as flash storage SSA leader

According to a new research report from Gartner, IBM is the worldwide market leader in flash storage solid state arrays (SSAs) based on revenue for 2013.

Flash, the memory technology used in everything from mobile phones and tablet PCs to thumb drives, is taking the enterprise by storm, helping businesses large and small improve the performance of applications as well as analytics in the era of big data.

Since IBM FlashSystem has no spinning disks, it offers ultra-high performance, extremely low latency, and lower costs from energy savings.

In its "Market Share Analysis: SSDs and Solid-State Arrays", Worldwide report for 2013, by Joseph Unsworth, published 10 June 2014, Gartner identified IBM as the leader, with 25% of the Solid State Array (SSA) market share revenue.

Revenue from IBM's FlashSystem product line increased 278% year-over-year from $43.4 million in 2012 to $164.4 million in 2013.

IBM offers flash solutions across its expansive storage portfolio, including the IBM FlashSystem 840 and IBM FlashSystem V840 all-flash arrays, and the DS8000 and Storwize V7000 families of advanced storage systems, that can be configured as all-disk, all-flash (SSD), or hybrid (disk and flash) systems. In addition, the IBM XIV Storage System can support up to 12 terabytes of flash cache.
