Uber will allow a different kind of delivery functionality for South African users tomorrow.

Uber - the ride-sharing application connecting passengers with drivers - has announced a frozen yoghurt delivery promotion, allowing users to place orders in 130 cities around the world, including Johannesburg, Pretoria, Durban and Cape Town.

The app allows drivers to interact with potential passengers through a cloud service for management and billing, while passengers with a smartphone interface can summon, track, and pay for the ride.

The company is pushing for greater uptake of its app and says its #UberICECREAM initiative will let users place frozen yoghurt orders between 11am and 5pm tomorrow.

Uber says several vehicles will roam the streets of selected cities to make deliveries on-demand.

"Uber will be partnering with Filo Yoghurt in Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban, and Myog Frozen Yoghurt in Cape Town to help South Africans turn the other cheek to the winter chill this weekend," the company says.

Alon Lits, GM at Uber Johannesburg, says the promotional drive is a first for SA. The company is in its third year globally.

Johannesburg, Pretoria and Durban users will be charged R165 for two 400ml tubs of yoghurt, while Cape Town users can expect to pay R120 for four tubs.

"New Uber users will also be able to apply the codes icecreamjhb, icecreamdbn or icecreamct, depending on their cities, and will get R200 off their first ride," adds the company.
