The African National Congress (ANC) in Gauteng today resolved to oppose e-tolls in the province.
Speaking at the party's provincial elective conference, secretary Hope Papo read a declaration, calling for e-tolls to be reconsidered. "The current system is too expensive, traffic flows have been negatively affected. We would rather have a fuel levy," he said, to applause from hundreds of delegates.
He added the party provincial structure would seek to make submissions to a review panel established by Gauteng premier David Makhura to probe the socio-economic impact of the e-tolls.
Reports in this morning's papers indicated the ANC's provincial leadership aimed to scrap e-tolls as the party looks to garner public support in the build-up to municipal elections in 2016.
The system has been met with strong public criticism and the panel set up by Makhura will hand over its findings in November.
