There has been rapid uptake of public cloud services in the past 12 months, requiring enterprises to get applications developed and into the market quicker than they have been.

This is according to Bill Fathers, senior VP and GM, Hybrid Cloud Services business unit at VMware, addressing delegates at the VMworld 2014 conference in Barcelona.

VMware, traditionally known for providing software for use in and around the private cloud, recently entered the public cloud space. "IT is entering a new 'professional' era of cloud computing," said Fathers.

In 2009, 2% of the world's businesses were on the public cloud platform; and five years later, only 6% are on public cloud. However, he said for the past 12 months, there has been a surge of public cloud adoption.

"Businesses are moving from the experimental phase of cloud adoption to the professional phase across the whole spectrum of the organisation."

As a result, he noted, there has been a new generation of suppliers bringing a new professional depth and breadth to the IT services available.

The ability for businesses to reap the full benefit of public cloud in terms of agility and cost saving is becoming make or break for companies, said Fathers.

During his keynote address at the event, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger revealed the company's plans to expand its vCloud Air Platform into Germany, where it will open a new data centre which will be available in 2015.
