Cisco South Africa this morning confirmed MD Alpheus Mangale is leaving the company at the end of this month.

Mangale will take on the role of chief enterprise officer at mobile giant MTN, joining former Microsoft MD Mteto Nyati, who also recently defected to the network operator.

"Alpheus Mangale, general manager of South Africa, has personally chosen to pursue new opportunities in South Africa, outside of Cisco. We would like to thank him for his many notable achievements and contributions," says Cisco.

The company announced Stefano Mattiello, who is based in Johannesburg, will act as GM of Cisco South Africa on an interim basis, "as we look to appoint a new talented leader of South Africa on a permanent basis".

Mangale was appointed to lead Cisco's local operations in July 2012, after 15 years with Dimension Data, where he held several positions.

These included systems engineering, product management, principal consultant, chief technology officer and chief operating officer positions.

During his tenure at Dimension Data, Mangale spent five years in the UK and Europe, where he was said to have played a key role in Dimension Data's global expansion strategy.

Both Mangale and Nyati's resignations came as surprises to the industry, with the latter recently announcing he would lead the MTN group's enterprise and ICT strategy for its operations in 22 countries.
