Engen, in conjunction with UTi Distribution, is now moving on phase two of its rollout of electronic lockers, which it describes as a "cost-effective, convenient parcel delivery that solves delivery challenges as the country's online shopping soars".

The first ByBox was unveiled in November 2014 at the Engen Woodlands Convenience Centre in Woodmead, Johannesburg. Phase two of the rollout involves UTi and Engen taking the concept to five Engen service stations in the Sandton area.

ByBoxes are billed as an "innovative locker-based delivery solution" that are secure. UTi Distribution Greg Saffy explains shoppers can now order online, and then select the ByBox delivery option for their nearest locker at selected Engen service stations.

"Parcels are dispatched the next day, and drivers scan them in at the selected ByBox terminal. The correct one opens automatically, and an SMS is sent to the customer with the delivery location and a PIN number to access the locker."

Customers can also send parcels via UTi ByBox by buying the company's UTi PAK from an associated retailer and packaging it, complete the dispatch note, scanning it in at a ByBox terminal and following the touch-screen instructions to put it in the designated locker.

Dumisani Bengu, retail business manager at Engen, says the initiative is the first of its kind in South Africa.
