APIs have become a vital part of today's digital economy, says Red Hat.

US-based application programming interface (API) solutions provider, 3scale, has partnered with Red Hat, a provider of open source solutions, to help organisations succeed in what they call the API economy.

3scale says as software becomes ubiquitous in today's business processes, the ways organisations, partners and customers interface with this software is becoming a critical differentiator in the marketplace.

APIs that form these interfaces fuel internal innovation, reach new customers, extend product life cycles and create vibrant partner ecosystems. The resulting shift in the way business works is creating huge new opportunities for both individual organisations and global commerce as a whole - this has been dubbed the API economy, 3scale explains.

The 3scale-Red Hat joint solution combines the 3scale API Management Platform and technologies from the Red Hat JBoss Middleware portfolio to provide an API development, deployment, and management offering designed to accelerate time-to-market for API initiatives and enable enterprises to innovate faster, the companies say.

The Red Hat JBoss Middleware portfolio provides a platform for the development, integration, and deployment capabilities needed to build software services that can be used as APIs.

3scale's API Management Platform complements Red Hat's middleware tools with features such as access control, analytics, and portals for developers and partners. They add the 3scale platform integrates with Red Hat's traditional on-premises middleware portfolio, as well as its cloud-based development tools in JBoss xPaaS Services for OpenShift.

Manfred Bortenschlager, API market development director at 3scale, says anyone in the world can use the joint solution, anywhere.

"There are no regional restrictions. In fact, many of the elements of this joint solution between 3scale and Red Hat are open source. Open source solutions make an easy and low-cost entry for governments, companies and other organisations to realise the benefits of being able to share their data assets with customers and partners, as well as to monetise them for revenue," Bortenschlager explains.

He adds this partnership enables organisations to use the joint solution for designing, developing and hosting APIs, as well as managing APIs to stay in full control and have full visibility of the API.

"APIs have become a vital part of today's digital economy," says Rob Cardwell, vice-president of strategic partnerships and alliances at Red Hat.

"As APIs become ubiquitous, organisations need to look beyond the technology and build an API strategy that fully embraces their business potential. Together, Red Hat and 3scale offer a comprehensive, open and trusted API platform to help organisations realise that potential," Cardwell concludes.
