Operating from a number of different geographical locations, Golden Star Resources, Ghana, faced a number of unique challenges in terms of its IT infrastructure and management. Due to its geographical spread, the company sought to simplify security administration without compromising the integrity of sensitive data governed by stringent compliance protocols.
The company's IT Manager, Richard Darko-Addison, explained that a key requirement was effective device control. More than 1 000 employees access the IT network and many PCs are shared by shift workers. To maintain the security of these machines, the company has implemented Panda Cloud Office Protection's (PCOP) device control, thereby ensuring that end-points are locked down and protected from potentially infected flash drives. This feature also assists in the prevention of data loss.
Another critical need was for a solution that offered easy remote management. "Before PCOP, we had to manage everything manually from the various sites. Now we have appropriate role groups for the various managers so they can manage devices independently from the comfort of their desks," explains Darko-Addison.
PCOP is managed from a simple, intuitive Web console, allowing centralised management of computers anytime, anywhere. Senior administrators are no longer required to visit remote locations in order to manage IT problems. Golden Star Resources currently holds over 600 PCOP licences.
This solution offers an easy-to-use, secure platform providing constant, robust protection for workstations, laptops and servers. Based on the concept of software as a service (SaaS), it leverages the Collective Intelligence knowledge base from the cloud, and allows Golden Star Resources to focus on its core business without the costs and difficulties associated with traditional security products.
PCOP has saved Golden Star no less than US$20 000 on travelling costs and less time has been spent troubleshooting problems. PCOP has been very beneficial to Golden Star Resources in terms of cost, convenience and performance.
Panda's helpful technical support and personalised feedback to each of its customers has been an enormous plus for Golden Star Resources. "Panda has been a lifesaver," says Mike Koampah, Group IT Manager. "I'm hoping that it only gets better in the coming years."
