Last SSD hurdles cleared

There is a still a misconception in South Africa that solid-state drive (SSD) storage can be expensive and risky, but this is no longer the case, says HP.

Marco Vieira, Storage country manager at HP South Africa, says South African CIOs are keen to move to benefit from SSD's ability to handle big data faster and more effectively, in a smaller footprint.

"The need for speed and agility, and moves to benefit from virtualisation and Internet of things technologies, are becoming key drivers for SSD adoption, but IT departments still feel they are constrained by budget when it comes to investing in high-capacity, high-performance solutions," says Vieira. In addition, he notes, there have been concerns about the limited lifespan of SSD technologies, in comparison with spinning disks.

Many still labour under the illusion that there must be a trade-off between performance, resilience and cost. "In the past, it was true that enterprises had to pay a premium for advanced performance. But HP 3PAR flash storage prices are now comparable to the price per usable Gb of HP's spinning disk, meaning enterprises can select the solution best suited to their needs, without cost as the main consideration," he says.

"Flash has become more viable now, and because the price per Gb is now comparable to that of spinning disk arrays, enterprises have no reason not to invest in SSD," says Vieira. "Not only has HP been a pioneer in bringing down the price point of its SSD technologies, it has also taken care of the potential risk of data loss, by guaranteeing units for five years and ensuring proactive replacement before their end of life."

Vieira says not every workload is suited to SSD technology, so the HP 3PAR portfolio of solutions includes a broad range of integrated storage solutions to allow for hybrid environments customised to meet business needs. "3PAR flash delivers the high performance needed to manage big data and IOT systems, while offering significant green efficiencies and facilities benefits due to its power efficiency and small size."
