Sanral says Nazir Alli's tenure as CEO has been "exceptional".

Nazir Alli, CEO of the South African National Roads Agency (Sanral), is set to retire next month and the agency is seeking a "person of influence with a track record of excellent communication skills" to replace him.

According to Sanral board chairperson Roshan Morar, the agency's retirement age, as per the Sanral retirement policy, is 65 and retirement is then taken at the end of the month of turning 65. "Mr Alli will be turning 65 in August and will be retiring."

Morar says Alli's last day in office will be determined by the minister of transport, in consultation with Sanral's board, subsequent to the appointment of the new CEO and a handover period.

Morar describes Alli's tenure as CEO as "exceptional", saying under his leadership, Sanral has grown from managing 7 200km of roads in 1998 to 21 403km currently, and is expected to grow to 35 000km in the future.

"He has driven the message of the 'user-pay' principle as a sustainable funding alternative for road infrastructure to support the fiscus," says Morar, in reference to Alli's championing of the controversial and much-maligned e-toll system in Gauteng.

"He has set an unparalleled standard for the governance of South Africa's national roads, and has ensured Sanral runs a clean business, consistently receiving unqualified audit reports."

Alli is a chartered engineer (civil) with a focus on project management, change management, institutional transformation and public private partnerships. He completed his undergraduate studies at the University of Plymouth and post-graduate studies at the Haas Business School: UC-Berkeley.

He is a fellow of the South African Institution of Civil Engineers, a member of the Institution of Civil Engineers (UK) and of the Institute of Directors and a fellow of the South African Academy of Engineers.
