Video-on-demand (VOD) service Vidi has partnered with Samsung to launch a streaming smart TV app in the country.

A statement notes the Vidi app is already pre-loaded on every Samsung Smart TV model from 2013 to 2015. Smart TV models from 2012 will follow shortly.

Vidi spokesperson Janene Matsukis says: "As the first South African company to launch a VOD streaming service, Vidi understands what local consumers want.

"It is important for us to provide our service directly on TV screens as it meets consumer demand for no cables, no hassle and no fuss. Samsung is the television industry leader and is at the forefront of pushing online streaming TV and video, so they were the ideal partner for us."

The partnership will see Vidi users receive one month's free access to SVOD service and one free movie from the TVOD collection.

Vidi, which was launched in September 2014, offers viewers unlimited subscription to a library of movies and TV series for R149 per month.

This week, the VOD service also announced it has added EasyPay as a payment option for South Africans to pay for their subscription-based Vidi content.

The EasyPay option offers consumers a point-of-sale bill payment service, which is integrated into a large number of national retailers, the Internet, self-service kiosks and mobile handsets.
