Cloud phone to offer 100GB storage

Some Android users may enjoy 100GB of smartphone storage as soon as February 2016.

The Robin smartphone uses an integrated cloud operating system to offer users 100GB of smartphone storage in the cloud, in addition to the phone's 32GB in on-board storage.

Robin, a product of US start-up Nextbit, automatically backs up the user's phone storage to the cloud whenever the phone is connected to WiFi and power supply (although the user can alter these default settings according to their own preferences). When the smartphone begins to run out of on-board space, it intuitively deletes content or apps the user has not accessed recently, which the user can subsequently restore from the cloud if and when they need them again.

In addition to ending phone storage frustrations and laborious backup processes, Robin aims to diminish the data loss users face when their phones are misplaced, stolen or damaged and they instantly lose important data.

The smartphone, which presents in a large, simplistic design comparable to that of the iPhone 6 or Samsung Galaxy S6, can be reserved via Kickstarter for $299 (R4 021), although shipping is at present unavailable to South African users, who may squeeze less functionality from the phone due to low Internet speeds and patchy phone connectivity.
