South Africa's MeerKat radio telescope has received a boost with the latest collaboration with Germany-based Max Planck Society.

A statement reveals the National Research Fund signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) with the Max Planck Society in respect of the MeerKat project.

Professor Martin Stratmann, president of the Max Planck Society, has promised an investment worth EUR11 million (R169 million) in the MeerKat project.

The terms of the investment will see German scientists and engineers be involved in the project, as well as receive systems developed in Bonn, said Stratmann.

Speaking at the signing of the MOU, Department of Science and Technology minister, Naledi Pandor, said she hopes Germany will recognise the value of investment in the project.

The South African MeerKat radio telescope is a precursor to the Square Kilometre Array (SKA) telescope, and will be integrated into the SKA during the first phase of construction.
