BBM continues to be an in-demand messaging tool across various operating systems.

BlackBerry messaging application BBM is still popular among users in South Africa as well as neighbouring countries.

This is the word from Matthew Talbot, senior VP for emerging solutions at BlackBerry, who says more Africans coming online encouraged growth in people using BBM.

The value of the BlackBerry and BBM brands in South Africa is still big and that's particularly exciting because of all the growth the company has been seeing in this market in the last few years, he says.

"South Africa and Nigeria are two of the biggest African markets where BBM continues to be a strong messaging tool across Android, iOS, BlackBerry 10 and BBO."

According to Talbot, there are over 22 million registered BBM users in Africa and over 380 million messages are sent daily. More than 17 000 people install the messaging application every day.

"We see over half a million new users install BBM every single month. That growth rate continues to accelerate as network effects take root in several markets across the continent."

BBM's latest developments, such as local content and value-added services like payments, attract more advertisers and enable consumers to become more engaged. BBM is quickly turning these ingredients into a thriving platform for communication and commerce, he notes.
