The rapid evolution of the Internet into a primarily mobile platform has changed user behaviour, says Huawei.

Competition and customer challenges require telecoms operators to transform digitally, said Steven Zheng, director of service marketing for Middle East and Africa at Huawei.

Zheng was speaking at the 2016 Huawei Middle East and Africa Services Summit, taking place this week in Cape Town.

He noted 'hot topics' like virtual reality, artificial intelligence and the Internet of things (IOT) are the new challenges that require telcos to transform their businesses.

"The future is coming and the telcos must improve end-user services."

Zheng's sentiments were reiterated by Jiangtao You, Huawei's VP for the Eastern and Southern Africa region, who said in a statement that there are massive opportunities for operators in the digital era, especially in terms of video, cloud services, IOT and smart cities.

"These, and other developments, will lead to 100 billion connections in 2025," said You.

"The rapid evolution of the Internet into a primarily mobile platform has significantly changed user behaviour."

Huawei believes operators must be able to deliver real-time, on-demand, all-online, do it yourself and social services to stay competitive, according to You.
